Introduction

Since the 1990s really, there's been a revolution in our knowledge of the countryside in Roman Britain. And I want to argue for you that this is leading to new ideas and new ways of understanding cultural change 1500 to 2000 years ago. To illustrate the way that that change has taken place, I start with a slide of actually the part of Cambridge, where I live. Those of you familiar with Cambridge, Castle Hills down here, modeling college and city centre below.
