CHAPTER

The Granny Smith Apple

The first known account of the origin of the apple was published in 1870. A woman called Maria smith found a seedling growing among ferns on her property. She decided to start cultivating the trees, but she only had a couple of years to do so before she died. Orchardist edward gallard bought part of the family property from their surviving children and he continued to cultivate granny smith apples until his death in the 19 teens.
