The Secret to a Long Lasting Blue Glow

Parchment tube worms make glowing blue mucus when threatened and that glow can last up to 72 hours. This is much longer than bioluminescence found in other organisms. The mucus was powering itself with an iron storage protein called ferritin, which releases iron ions when it's stimulated by the blue light.
