In the early modern period, it became my kind of conviction that people were thinking and worrying about and hoping for the end of history. It put them into what we might call a kind of sacred drama that God had created the world and God would bring the world to an end. And where did they stand in this arc of time between the beginning and the end? And what role did they have in building on what had come before, transforming what was there and preparing for the end?
