The Week in Art

CHAPTER

Is She Still Using That Kind of Raw Glazing?

Rhee is famous for her raw glazing. She uses the scruffito technique where she's etching with a needle tool through the glaze revealing the color of the clay beneath. The story goes that she and Hans Koper visited a free stone circle in Wiltshire in the late 1940s when they encountered Bronze Age bowls which had etched linear designs on the surface. Both Koper and Rhee were incredibly taken with this technique and began to use it in their own work. It became a real recognizable signature technique that you see in her work from that late 1940s moment all the way through to her work in the 80s and early 90s.
