The Risks of Press Freedom in Afghanistan
Voice of America and RFERL were reporting from almost every province before the Taliban seized control. Many Afghan employees weren't US citizens or green card holders, so they were left behind. VOA later said they started telling their Afghanistan-based journalists to complete immigration evacuations in June 2021. Neither Voice of America nor RFEL have reported how many of their journalists and stringers remain in the country for security reasons.
