The Catesbys and the Winteurs

The plot began with a man named Robert Catesby. He had become very disillusioned with the government early on when he saw his father being persecuted for not conforming to Church of England rules. Other men related to them were also sympathetic to their cause. They hoped that maybe Spain would invade England to help the Catholics, and they offered their support in that regard.
