A marginal likelihood is the average probability of the data given that model and the effect size averaged under your beliefs about the effect size. It was introduced by Richard Feynman in his ethical formulation of quantum electrodynamics. He wanted to evaluate the marginal likelihood of paths of say small particles which would necessarily involve computing or integrating extremely high dimensional probability distributions, an intractable problem for statisticians.
