In 1981, textbook adoptions in 11 states were influenced by the Gablers according to one study. The same year, Eagle Forum in St. David, Arizona successfully banned required reading lists which included classics by Joseph Conrad, Nathaniel Hawthorne and Ernest Hemingway. These right wing censorship campaigns prompted by conservative groups like Phyllis Schlafly's post-the net Morrill Majority and Eagle Forum.
