Wolf is really sort of taking conventions and then twisting them within some kind of genre framework. There's a cool essay about this on another called Alton's library, which is sort of a collection of essays on Wolf. He would literally just do something like that and see where it took him. But I think it's also a great way to look at some of the strange choices he makes in his books.
