The Effect of SMR Drives on Workloads
An SMR drive that just necessarily has to do a lot more work is going to wear out more quickly. It would be interesting to analyze the workloads those drives had experienced. I don't know if it was about we built all this capacity to build SMR drives and nobody is buying them because anybody doing the biggest hard drives they can get is probably actually sensitive to the performance and the longevity of the drive. But at the same time when the idea of SMR first came out it was about stretching the capacity a little bit further to try to get more, maybe made sense as a use case.
