The History of the Oyster Bay Clubhouse
Oyster Bay was a hotbed of revolutionary activity in the years leading up to the war. British soldiers commandeered the townsens home, forcing the family to keep them fed and housed despite their support for independence. One Townsend used the situation to his advantage by joining George Washington's Culper Spy Ring. He would report back to General Washington on what the British were up to thanks to his unique connections. Of all the townsens, it was Samuel's daughter Sarah, or Sally, as she was known, whose life would truly be changed by the British occupation.
