The Treatment of the Heart in Egyptian Mummification

The authors of the CT study speculate that perhaps the two plaques on her abdomen and her sternum were meant as a kind of healing or a replacement for the wounds inflicted by the embalming process itself. They say there are three basic patterns of heart treatment in mummies. One is retention, so the heart stays in the chest even if other organs are removed. Number two is removal, the heart is taken out of the body. And we don't know why the heart was removed.
