I don't think there's been anything quite like this. The job itself emerged from the second world war, when it had been obvious that science had been important during the war effort. But since then, of course, there hasn't been a crisis of this this dimension. It does put science right back in the forefront, because it's so obvious that you need it at that mn ad,. having to make sense of the science is, is an enormous challenge. I thought that actually we were getting scientists and medics up there to try and explain things at a time of great uncertainty and ovety, real national pressure. That 'uld be their absolute worst nightmare.
