The story appeared in the new yorker in october of 19 62 and was included under the title irish revel. The character mary is versed in men's work and knows how to manage a farm. So she's describing it for us the reader as she rides her bicycle down into town. When she rides into town, there's been a cattle fair that day, and the streets are lined with dung.
