The Origins of the Baltic Sea Amber
The Romans were interested in the amber that washes up on the shore of the Baltic. And I think the amber is important enough to have important effects at the northern end, at the receiving end of the amber by the Baltic Sea. The Polish archaeologists found an interesting set of wooden causeways in the immediate southern shores of the Baltic and its precisely in Gothic areas. So I suspect that's what gives the Goths an original distinctiveness. But otherwise, all the Romans know about them is that they have monarchical authority in a way that many of the other Germanic groups don't.
