The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders sets out criteria for diagnosis as deficit-based. There are things autistics have in common that are not in the diagnostic criteria in the DSM-5. Some things may be related, yet don't have a causal connection. For example, face blindness might contribute to social awkwardness, but it's not by itself a cause of deficits in social communication.
