The National Security Council's Confidence in Operation Eagle Claw

Operation Eagle Claw was a failed attempt to rescue 52 people held captive at the U.S. embassy in Tehran on April 24, 1980. Equipment failure in the rescue helicopters made it necessary to end the mission. Two of our American aircraft collided on the ground. A helicopter and a transport aircraft were destroyed. It was the type of scenario that the National Security Council wanted to avoid.
