Pater's Decadence in English Culture

Pater's hedonistic call took on a life of its own, and what he was saying was somewhat more sophisticated as Neil says than people read him as being. In this idea of burning with a hard flame and maintaining this ecstasy is a new vision of what it was to be an individual,. one that puts sensual pleasure at the heart of his work. He imported some of Baudelaire's attitudes into an English context and brought them into conjunction with aestheticism we might associate with Ruskin in earlier generation. That confluence of Baudalaire, Pater and Ruskin is I think central to what we now understand as decadence in English culture.
