The object-oriented versus functional debate has been raging for a long time years. It's probably one of those things, like anything else in web development where you see pendulum swings. I think that good developers can take kind of the best parts of each and that those best parts don't really conflict too much. The only thing about OO programming that fights with pure functions is the idea of like mutating an existing object.
