I'm just thinking about the fact that religion as a cultural response to the difficulty of coordinating large groups of people. 150 or 200,000 years ago, if you're in a familial tribe of maybe 25 to 50 people, you probably don't need religion. There would be no adaptive reason to have that. And there's a clue in the archaeological record that I think supports what you're suggesting.
