JV was released in May 2017 42 months after he'd arrived. One of his secret supporters helped him get to the airport where he changed into his thin disguise and stuck his headphones in. They weren't connected to anything but his hope was that they would at least stop people from talking to him. He even managed to fake an ID card under the name Ian Valle which was the most PNG sounding alias he could think of.
