What Happens During the Romantic Period?
Beethoven starts off writing music that's strongly influenced by Haydn. By the end of his career, he's doing pieces that basically are destroying these forms from within. There's an analogy between that and what happens in other fields of endeavor. It sounds very much to me like something similar is happening as musical forms develop.
