The Phase Transition in Warfare
The ancient Greeks were very clear that honor was won through competition whether it was military, athletic or playwright competitions. It was won by competing but by the rules. You lost standing if you cheated. We could look at competition among European states between 1871 and 1914 and make the case that something very similar happened. The rules went by the boards and when that happened fear entered the picture in a much stronger way than it had before. And then people began using worst case analysis and we all know where that ends up.
