Why Do Young Female Mice Smell Adult Female Urine?

For newborn female mice, they live longer if they smell adult female urine in their environment. This is the first evidence in mammals that lifespan can be increased by just smelling an odor alone. We've known for a while since the late 70s that getting young female mice to smell an older female's urine causes a delay in puberty. So evolutionarily, it makes sense to delay puberty. And it's true the opposite way, actually, too. If female mouse pups smell a lot of adult male mouse urine, they tend to go through puberty earlier - possibly because that smell can signal that there's a lot of males to reproduce with.
