Tod grew up in a predominantly african american lencum neighborhood of atlanta. He was teased for, as he said, trying to be white am. Tod eventually picked up basically from his friends how to apply to college and was the first person in his family to go to college. But little by little, as tod starts to succeed in college, he starts to distance himself from his family. And then when his grandparents die, he starts going home less and less....
