For much of the 20th century, piles of coins bearing images and names of kings like Demetrius and Menander were the only significant pieces of evidence that the Greeks were there at all. As was the case with Egypt in the Near East, Greek became the administrative lingo franca for both Bactria and Gandara well into the Kushan period. Nearly five decades of archaeological research has dramatically changed our understanding of Hellenistic Central Asia and India.
