A bulleted list is not going to be able to undo their years of depression. You have to really get that part clear about what is your intention in having this conversation. When the boundary is with yourself, you promised yourself that you would end the conversation politely. And if that person wants to be in relationship with you, they will start to change their behavior. It might take a lot of training, but they will get there.

She also writes the weekly “Dear Therapist” advice column for The Atlantic and is the co-host of the iHeart Radio podcast "Dear Therapists."
