I think it's more useful to think rather in terms of socialism or not socialism or socialism versus capitalism for example. At one end of the continuum you have an environment in which people are free to do whatever they want and nobody's gonna tell them otherwise. At the other end of the spectrum you have a situation where state is going to dictate all of their activities. If you picture life instead of as a binary socialism not socialism but as this continuum. Countries like Venezuela are closer to one end, countries like the United States are closer to the other. This soft kind of socialism that Bernie Sanders is talking about is closer to the Venezuela side of the continuum than what free marketers would call for.
