The Source of All Our Ideas Comes From Experience
Rationalists thought that some of our ideas are innate, we're just born with them. Empiricists said they had to come through experience. So you only get to be able to think about trees because you have the idea of a tree before your mind. And when you think of the cave, as it turns out, for the person that's been brought up in the cave, not only can't know anything about what's outside the cave, but actually they probably can't even think anything about what’s outside the cave.
