The Evolution of Monasticism

Gregory is coming along like if Anthony, I think is born around 284 or something like that. But Anthony starts off this broader ascetic movement where he is moving out into the desert and living a life of fasting and prayer. Basil writes a rule, a kind of handbook, a set of guidelines for how to live a monastic life. And so we don't see the evidence for the kind of extreme asceticism that you know, simming the stylite up on a pillar for years on end.
