Iver snuck away in the middle of the night with quote, the gospels and chosables and copes and robes. He went early before the day to the Abbott, Torreld, telling him how the outlaws were coming to Peterborough. The Chronicle helpfully adds that Iver was acting on orders of the monks when he did this. So who knows? Harroward and his men may have had a plan.
