Introduction
One-third of US coal-fired power plants have been retired, leaving only 205,000 megawatt hours of capacity as of June 2022. Part of this is because of concerns about climate change and air pollution. Improved technology for extracting natural gas from shale fields has reduced the cost of natural gas as a fuel. renewable energy has begun to gain an increasing share of that electricity market.
