Blackbeard was beheaded so they could take Blackbeard's head as a trophy and proof of his death back to their captains in Hampton Roads. The two contingents started piecing together what Blackbeard had been doing, then discovered a lot of the goods that Blackbeard had stolen from the French sugar ships hidden under like a pile of hay in the official North Carolina collector of customs barn. This caused all kinds of trouble later headaches for spots with lawsuits against Lieutenant Maynard and others who got locked into battles long thereafter because the raids had been illegal.
