The difficulty is in working out when one of these super intelligent artificial general intelligence actually becomes conscious. If it's very good at mimicking our behavior, and if it's also essentially a black box, that is, we don't really understand how it's doing what it's doing. And there is AI where we can't really say why it's making the judgments that it's making. Then it's going to be hard to know, hard to distinguish conscious processing from simply very rapid mechanical processing and learning. But I think that is the clue. We need to try to understand what's going on.
