This week end, thees almost certain to be a huge majority in favour of ukranian independence. As many as three out of every four voters are expected to say yes to a divorce from the soviet union. More than 90 % of ballots backed independence, representing the support of more than three quarters of the eligible voting population. In 20 14, a pro russian government in ukraine was toppled following public protests and a new interim government came to power. Russia refused to recognize it, and within weeks, moscow's response came in the form of the annexation of the strategically important peninsula crimea.
