The Importance of Physical Culture in the Interwar Period
After the First World War, weightlifting emerged as an ideal of masculine beauty and masculinity. It's been read as a kind of proto-fascist tension to the uber-mensch ideal of white western masculinity. This is about more democratic form of leisure and physical culture becoming possible in the interwar period,. So even just the possibility of having time to spend in sports does signal something of a change from 19th century class structure into early 20th century.
