The Nonintuitiveness of Phenomenological Consciousness
There definitely do seem to be aspects of phenomenological consciousness. The integrated information theory take on this is very much, as you said, mathematical. It's an interesting case study. I think it's at least worth trying to develop rigorous mathematical theories of consciousness.
