Immigrants and the Family Dimension
The author of a new book on Chinese-American relations says that assimilation is not just ended when you arrive at the other shore, but actually a process. Many american household are deeply imbedded in extended family networks and many families struggle to provide care for older generations. But research shows that grandmothers in latino and africa, American and working class families play a centra rote for their children. And they also emphasize, oh, we are chinese, we are tawani, so we care for our grandchildren. So my point is that alom times we do talk with opo cultural differences between tian, between chinese communities and the us.
