S indianapolis was attacked by a japanese submarine in the philippine sea. The survivors found themselves scattered over miles of open ocean. They congregated into groups that were spread so far apart they couldn't see or hear one another. But even as the hours turned to days, with no sign of rescue coming, many of the survivors refused to give up hope.
