What on Earth Was in Thomas' Mind?
Thomas took the oath without consulting his bishops, and instructed his bishops to do the same. The flashpoint was the debate about the king's right to try conflicting clerks in secular courts. For three days Henry piled on the pressure, while the secular lords threatened the bishops. However the bishops stood firm together, and then Thomas bottled it. He didn't even wait to get home before he recanted.
