Aquinas: It is impossible to proceed to infinity in a series of contingent beings, each of which receives its existence from another. The understanding is that this causality is happening simultaneously. As Aristotle says, cause and effect are simultaneous in act. We're not talking about historical chains of causes; we're talking about the giving of being taking place now.
