The APA used to use emotional difficulty with managing emotions as a diagnostic criteria for ADHD. Now they're having a conversation about putting it back in because the research is really clear that one of the core characteristics of ADHD is emotional dysregulation, ups and downs. There's a huge fight, flight, freeze thing going on for people who have ADHD. Their body goes into that high alert very quickly. The ones you don't notice are the intensity of shame or lack of self-esteem, the desire to escape from things that feel difficult.
