There are plenty of perfectly legitimate objectives other than relative return to some particular index like the S&P 500. But 99% of investors today are not focused on those types of goals. It's an abstraction. They don't even know what they're asking for. Maybe, if you understood what was in the S-P 500, you would never want to own it.
