The Story of Sputnik the Second
Nick the second has been launched. A multi-stage rocket with a fuel more powerful than anything the West has in stock puts its final stage into around the world orbit. Lyka was incorrectly identified as a husky in news reports at the time. But Russian researchers like Vladimir Yasdovsky had made a conscious decision to use stray dogs, mongrels for their experiments. They decided to train not pedigree dogs, but street dogs for the space program. The strongest survived.
