We must not shy away from building sharp tools for fear they may be turned against us. A reluctance to grapple with the often grim reality of an ongoing geopolitical struggle for power poses its own danger. Our hesitation, perceived or otherwise, to move forward with military applications of artificial intelligence will be punished. The ability of free and democratic societies to prevail requires something more than moral appeal. Hard power in this century will be built on software.
