The History of CCDs
In 1970, Boil and Smith published a paper on their new device. The control pulses let you shift charges around in a manner similar to how magnetic bubbles slide around on bubble memory. You can now print an image detector on a silicon wafer that benefits from all the same upsides as other microchip technology. This means that imaging could now be subject to Moore's law.
