The term muck raker comes from a 19 o six speech by president theodore roosevelt. It was coined after the publication of tarbell's work on standard oil, which we haven't really gottin to yet. Mc clure understood that a well written narrative that exposed the immoral and unethical deeds of the rich and powerful could make for an incredibly compelling story.
