In 1924, Dr. Roscoe Spencer injected himself with mashed up ticks and carbolic acid to stop the spread of Rocky Mountain spotted fever. The vaccine was actually kind of effective. It prevented it in some cases and even if you did get the infection, it wasn't nearly as bad as most cases.
