What Are Calories?
French scientist Antoine Lavazier weighed himself every day for 30 years. He didn't know what a calorie was, but he could see that what he ate had a big effect on what he weighed and what he excreted. Lavazier's idea was that as the guinea pig burned all the food that it had eaten, its body would give off an equal amount of energy as heat.
